Multiple Bookmark Bars in Chrome

One Chrome bookmark bar. Multiple profiles.

Organize different bookmark sets for work, private use, study, gaming or projects and switch between them without creating a separate bookmark database.

The limitation

Chrome gives you one visible bookmark bar

Chrome's bookmark bar is useful, but one bar can become difficult to manage when the same browser is used for several parts of your life. Work tools, private sites, study material, gaming pages and project links quickly compete for the same space.

BarShift gives that single bookmark bar a profile system. Instead of showing several bars at the same time, you switch which profile is currently represented by the real Chrome bookmark bar.

Step by step

How to use multiple bookmark bar profiles in Chrome

  • Install BarShift from the Chrome Web Store.
  • Create at least two profiles, for example Work and Private.
  • Add bookmarks normally while a profile is active.
  • Open BarShift and switch profiles whenever you change context.
  • Use Save current page to send a page directly to the profile where it belongs.
Example setup

Separate contexts without separate browsers

A simple setup might use Work for internal tools and customer systems, Private for everyday sites, Study for courses and documentation, and Projects for temporary research. Switching profiles changes the visible bookmark bar without requiring another browser profile just to organize bookmarks.

What stays native

Your bookmarks are still Chrome bookmarks

BarShift's profiles are based on ordinary Chrome bookmark folders. The extension does not ask you to rebuild your collection in a proprietary database. This also means Chrome's own bookmark management and bookmark sync remain relevant to your workflow.

Profile exampleWhat you could keep there
WorkInternal tools, dashboards, tickets, customer portals
PrivateShopping, banking, travel, everyday sites
StudyCourses, documentation, research and learning resources
ProjectsTemporary research, references and project-specific tools

Quick answers about how BarShift works with Chrome bookmarks and bookmark bar profiles.

Chrome normally provides one visible bookmark bar. BarShift uses profiles to switch which set of bookmarks is shown in that real bookmark bar.

No. BarShift is for bookmark bar organization inside the Chrome profile you are already using. Separate Chrome profiles are a different browser feature.

BarShift organizes profile contents using normal Chrome bookmark nodes and folders. The visible bookmark bar represents the active profile.

Yes. You can create multiple profiles and organize them with icons, colours, descriptions, pinning, hiding and ordering.
